In June 2017, Mercy Hands distributed nutritional high energy biscuits to children and families in Shahama camp for displaced people (13 kilometers north of Tikrit).
Both school and out of school children are included in the distribution. Mercy Hands is one of only a few NGOs providing aid to IDPs in Shahama camp.
The Shahama camp hosts two types of displaced people, those voluntarily displaced from Hawija (a city 50 kilometers west of Kirkuk that is still under ISIS control) and those who were forcibly displaced by Iraqi forces from Al-Shirqat area. There is tension between the two groups because the latter is seen as supporters of ISIS while Hawija IDPs fled out of their town to escape ISIS.
